It’s time for another Classics Spin by The Classics Club for any who are interested. What is the spin?
It’s easy. Clubbers are to list on their blogs by next Monday, May 20, the choice of any twenty books left to read from the Classics Club list – in a separate post. This is the Spin List. Clubbers are to challenge themselves by reading one of these twenty books in May & June. The list should be in the following order:
- 5 Classics Club books you are dreading/hesitant to read
- 5 Classics Club books you can’t WAIT to read,
- 5 Classics Club books you are neutral about
- 5 free choice (favorite author, rereads, ancients — whatever you choose.)
By next Monday, May 20, a post will go up from number 1 through 20. The challenge is to read whatever book falls under that number on the Spin List, by July 1. There will be a check in post for July, to see who made it the whole way and finished the spin book.
I’ve carried over the book corresponding to number 14 in the last Spin, (Oliver Twist) from April to May which I hope to finish reading soon. I must say that these days, my reading has become so so slow. There are days when I don’t open any book at all. But then I’m game for this Spin #2 so here is my list: a repeat of the first spin actually with a substitute for number 14.

Well yes, but it’s also about waking to freedom (greed, power and choices or lack thereof) and understanding a little of the nature of human beings! 🙂 My passion, the understanding of “we” humans, the good and the not so good! 🙂
Oh dear there’s a fair bit of gloom in there especially Tess and Mrs Dalloway!

Aww…you have Anna Karenina there, I’m not sure I’ll pick that one for a month reading. From your list I have only read Tom Sawyer, Mrs. Dalloway and Treasure Island. Actually I liked Huck Finn more than Tom Sawyer, but Mark Twain’s adventures novels are really enjoyable.

Dracula and Anna Karenina are both on my favourite books EVER list, so I’m kind of hoping you get one of these, even if you are hesitant to read them..
Oh Sam, now that the spin brought up Pride and prejudice as my no 6, I wish it had picked Anna. The raves about it are so good 🙂
Dracula was not at all what I expected, but it was so good. I liked Anna Karenina, too (though not as much as War and Peace). Pride and Prejudice is one of the best novels ever written, in my opinion. And I LOVED Jane Eyre and The Mayor of Casterbridge, too.
You’ve got plenty on this list that I haven’t read yet, too, so it’d be interesting to read your thoughts on those.

Thanks, Roof Beam. 🙂 You’ve just made it more easier for me to read P and P; the spin came up with this as no. 6. Though it is a re-read, I can’t remember any detail at all. Dracula is also a re-read but the vampire bit and all that blood sucking put me off

Pride and prejudice is my read at the moment and it is enjoyable, wasn’t sure i would like it but have been pleasantly surprised. King Solomon’s Mines, Treasure Island were wonderful too. Good choices.

P&P has lots of class and battle of the sexes themes but manages to put them across in a witty and intelligent way. It’s a lot cleverer than i imagined it would be.
You are right about the wit. I’ve started to enjoy Mr. Bennet’s sharp sarcasm and dry humour 🙂
