Ligo Haibun Challenge ~ His Words

deatth, love, Nature, William Wordsworth

PictureThis week’s  Ligo Haibun has two famous quotes as the prompt: Earth laughs in flowers”  by Ralph Waldo Emerson and “Come forth into the light of things, let nature be your teacher” by William Wordsworth.

My choice is Come forth into the light of things, let nature be your teacher” by William Wordsworth.

His Words

“Come forth into the light of things, let nature be your teacher.”

Those had been Ray’s last words as he took his final breath. I knew he was quoting Wordsworth but my grief had been too deep to pay much heed. He had been ill for two years; taking care of him had sapped me of any zest for life. With my ill humour I was the darkness in his world. His death left me hollow and adrift, and it was easier to sink into a vortex so black that it ate at my soul.

Ray loved nature. His room had been full of flowers and sunshine. The melody of the birds always put a smile on his face. And he bore his pains with cheerful stoicism. “Cheer up, Maggie. listen, can you hear their song? The darkness of this world cannot match the light in my heart when I hear them sing.”

Now as Ray’s voice whispered to me from the grave, I knew instinctively that the period of mourning was over. With his words, I’ve been delivered from the power of darkness and thrust into a light so powerful and sublime that I could only gasp at the rays as the beauty of nature glowed in my heart.

your final breath
illuminates my heart
words set me free

Ligo Haibun Challenge ~ Everest

Everest, Haibun, love story

Photo 2

This week’s  Ligo Haibun has two prompt photos courtesy of Padmini (Nightlake) and Penny. My choice is below:

Everest

She stood by the window gazing into the cloudy skies, seeking peace. Funny, but she had met Cyril on a day like this. The clouds were angry and had refused to ease up a little for sunshine to peek through. And she had thought that his dark looks matched the weather. A dark cloud now settled in her heart and only he could lift it.

She was so lost in thought that she did not hear him approach. He startled her with his touch on her shoulders. Ever so lightly but electric. She turned, and he smiled. She gasped. That smile and his sinful good looks always did that to her.

Picture‘My parents are waiting for us, sweetest.’ He read the fear in her eyes. Pulling her  gently away from the window, he kissed her.  ‘I love you, Madeline.’

‘I love you too.’ she whispered.

‘They approve of you, my dear. They understand that I love the gardener’s daughter.’

Surprised, her eyes wandered past his royal head to the clouds. To her amazement, the skies had effortlessly dispelled its gloom and the brightness now tugged at her heart.

daughter of the soil
I’ll jump over Everest
for you are my queen

Ligo Haibun Challenge ~ Lost Moments

Garden of Eden, Lost Moments

PictureThis week’s  Ligo Haibun has two choices of prompts for us: “Lost Moments” or “The earth has music for those who listen.”  [George Santayana]

I hope it is not becoming monotonous to say that I had a fourth honorable mention for last week’s haibun that I wrote.  A hearty thank you to all the three judges for mentioning  my work out of very high quality writings that were presented last week.  Again, thanks to all my  lovely friends out there who continue to support me in my journey of better writing. My choice is

Lost Moments

They always say in my village that ‘a thing for you never lost’; what is yours will surely come to you but in this case I knew the elders were wrong, probably because I also started on the wrong footing. You see, Roger was not mine to begin with. He belonged to Serwaa, my best friend. But I loved him with a passion that defied reason and the close bond between his wife and me. And for that matter he was mine.

Our meeting place was the wide expanse of greens in the forbidden forest. We loved on the plushness for hours on end, gazing into the skies with the huge boughs of the mahogany, odum, wawa and silk cotton trees providing shade. They nodded knowingly while powerful winds whistled our secrets; we felt safe. Or so I thought.

Much later, when Serwaa’s agonized and accusing eyes bore into my dark soul I knew I had lost a treasured friend. I had no words for her. And there was no moment for me to redeem myself. It seemed rather selfish and lame to drive the dagger home by saying, ‘I also love the man you love, Serwaa.’

heat of the moment
forbidden fruit becomes gall
selfish love
