I have not been paying much attention to my reading for almost a year now. I have no reason that will be acceptable. And since I have also decided that no resolutions this year, I’m just going to get back into the groove by joining the fifth Classics Spin by The Classics Club What is the spin?
Clubbers are to list on their blogs by next Monday, February 10, the choice of any twenty books left to read from the Classics Club list in a separate post. The list should be in the following order:
- 5 Classics Club books you are dreading/hesitant to read
- 5 Classics Club books you can’t WAIT to read,
- 5 Classics Club books you are neutral about
- 5 free choice (favorite author, rereads, ancients — whatever you choose.)
By next Monday, February 10, a post will go up from number 1 through 20. The challenge is to read whatever book falls under that number on the Spin List by April 1.
Since I never got to finish reading any of the books from the previous Spins, I’m maintaining them with a few replacement:
5 Classics Club books you are dreading/hesitant to read
- Marc Ferro: – Nicholas II (The Last of the Tsars)
- Stoker, Bram – Dracula
- Tolstoy, Leo – Anna Karenina
- Haggard, Rider – Nada The Lily
- Shakespeare – Coriolanus
5 Classics Club books you can’t WAIT to read
6. Austen, Jane – Pride and Prejudice7. Dumas, Alexander – The Count of Monte Cristo
8. Bronte, Charlotte – Jane Eyre
9. Spyri, Johanna – Heidi
10. Hardy, Thomas – Tess of the D’Urbervilles
5 Classics Club books you are neutral about

Virginia Woolf – Mrs. Dalloway5 Free choice (favorite author, rereads, ancients — whatever you choose.) And those I have chosen below are my favourites/re-reads
16. Ama Ata Aidoo – Dilemma of a Ghost 17. Hope, Anthony – Prisoner of Zenda 18. Ayi Kwei Armah – Beautiful Ones Are Not Yet Born 19. Haggard, Rider – King Solomon’s Mines 20. Stevenson, Robert Louise – Treasure IslandWish me luck

This is a really interesting list. You have some things I haven’t heard of before.

Is that so? Which ones are these? 🙂

Anna Karenina is such a wonderful book, but I can certainly see why you might be dreading its length. I so agree with all your “Can’t Wait” list ….. well, except that Hardy is depressing but he is still good. I just finished Mrs. Dalloway and really enjoyed it but I did like Woolf’s To The Lighthouse better. So many great books! I hope you get the one you want!

I may just have to read Mrs. Dalloway after reading my spin number Treasure Island. Then I might consider Anna Karenina. I must confess that yes the length is what puts me off it. Thanks Cleo!

I’d rather you than me, some of them remind me of primary school where we were force fed them! Number six though is a real favourite of mine!

Funny enough I want to read P and P because of all the raves I’ve been reading. Though it’s a re-read for me, I can’t even remember a thing since like you I had to read most of these Classics way back as a kid!

Cool list, I am glad to have discovered your blog. Even if you don’t end up reading Mrs. Dalloway during the Classics spin, I hope that one day you get around to it and your indifference is changed into pure admiration! Virginia Woolf is a personal favorite of mine. 😛

Jason, I have a copy of Mrs. Dalloway sitting in my cabinet at the office. maybe I will pick it up after reading my spin number Treasure Island 🙂 In fact I am sure to do so after what your wonderful commendation.

Oh Kim, I needed it. You know the Spin number came up today, no. 20, Treasure Island. it is a re-read for me and I sincerely don’t mind reading all over.

I tried to get my grandson to read it with me. I read it and he never caught up. Age of Videos SMH

Ha ha ha You are so right. And it’s really sad. My last two boys hate reading. As for the middle one, it has affected both his written and spoken English!
silentlyheardonce said:
the same with my oldest grandson. My middle one, the one that was with me he reads but only if he has to. My granddaughter she reads but if you give her a electronic she puts the book down.

i got Tess as one of my previous spins. It was lovely to revisit Hardy’s world.
Good luck on Monday 🙂

Brona, thanks. You know the spin number is up and I got Treasure Island! Quite lucky 🙂

A few on your list made my 20 spin list as well; Treasure Island and The Mayor of Casterbridge.
I enjoed Jane Eyre and Anna Karenina. I’m trying to squeeze in finish The Count of Monte Cristo, this has been a fun read.

I would have loved to spin to fall on Anna Karenina but it fell on Treasure Island, a re-read for me. I don’t mind, really. Did you get lucky?
Plethora said:
My spin winner is The Odyssey. Not a bad spin, thankfully it isn’t too long to add to my already bulging currently reading books.
Rajlakshmi said:
Good luck with reading… I started reading Anna Karenina… Hope I will manage to complete it.
readinpleasure said:
Rajlakshmi, my luck number that came up was 20, Treasure Island. And I dont mind reading it again! Thanks
Plethora said:
Rajlakshmi – Once I got past the confusion with the names Anna Karenina moved along. Only a couple of slow spots, you’ll find the grass growing discussion later tedious, but bound to happen with a book this size.
