Day 25 of Mindful Writing Challenge. My 22nd stone
Old Age
Lots of patience and calm moments Topped with much tolerance To deal with old age In doing so, much warmth floats around And love takes root, spreads and is reciprocated Wisdom is gained Copyright © Celestine Nudanu 25/1/13

It is not easy at older age, lots of things and inconveniences that only an old person will know. This society needs more patience and love, for the young will one day become old.

So very true dear sister C, our young people would do well to pay attention to the elders.

Thanks for the support 🙂 When I see them treating the old folks with so much disrespect, it burns my heart.

The more experiences we go through & the more time that passes we realize more & more what really matters.

Thanks for reminding that old people have good things to share. And patience may be needed to get there. Very nice. This read like something from an ancient book of wisdom.

Oh Alice, I live with my mother and I have learnt a lot from her. 🙂

Powerful and poignant. I couldn’t agree more with your sentiment here. It is partly the youth and partly the trend in society that values youth and vitality above wisdom and love. Just as most things, there is money to be made. The world today suffers from agism and it is worse in some cultures (such as the US).
readinpleasure said:
Oh Alice, even in Africa the trend now is that old age is not respected. A child will no longer get up and give his seat to the elderly. They have rights too to that seat on the bus 🙂

Your words’much warmth floats around’ went straight to my heart. It is hard to be patient with old folks but the rewards are great! Thanks for sharing!
readinpleasure said:
You are right, Wabi. They do try your patience but we have to remind ourselves that we shall get to that stage if God lbesses with more years. 🙂 Thank you, as always 🙂

Sometimes I wish I knew old people like the ones other people talk about. The ones I know are miserable in their skins and work on inflicting this misery on others. I always pray for patience to be present for them without taking all of it personally. Sorry to burst the bubble folks!

I can understand you, KK. I do know of a few who are what we will call ‘witches’, very cantankerous and meddling. I had such a wonderful relationship with my grandma when growing up and even now I miss her. 🙂

I was toying around and came back to this post. My earlier comment still holds true but I have a certain sadness having now left Ghana and left behind my 89 yr old gma. She fought with us every chance she got and gossiped about us to the neighbors…a really distasteful experience but I think how can I learn from that for when I get to be that age. This piece still moves me. Thanks for writing it.

You are very welcome, KK. It is a question I ask myself these days especially when my kids misbehave towards my mum.
