It’s time for another Classics Spin by The Classics Club for any who are interested. What is the spin?
It’s easy. Clubbers are to list on their blogs by next Monday, May 20, the choice of any twenty books left to read from the Classics Club list – in a separate post. This is the Spin List. Clubbers are to challenge themselves by reading one of these twenty books in May & June. The list should be in the following order:
- 5 Classics Club books you are dreading/hesitant to read
- 5 Classics Club books you can’t WAIT to read,
- 5 Classics Club books you are neutral about
- 5 free choice (favorite author, rereads, ancients — whatever you choose.)
By next Monday, May 20, a post will go up from number 1 through 20. The challenge is to read whatever book falls under that number on the Spin List, by July 1. There will be a check in post for July, to see who made it the whole way and finished the spin book.
I’ve carried over the book corresponding to number 14 in the last Spin, (Oliver Twist) from April to May which I hope to finish reading soon. I must say that these days, my reading has become so so slow. There are days when I don’t open any book at all. But then I’m game for this Spin #2 so here is my list: a repeat of the first spin actually with a substitute for number 14.
5 Classics Club books you are dreading/hesitant to read
- Marc Ferro: – Nicholas II (The Last of the Tsars)
- Stoker, Bram – Dracula
- Tolstoy, Leo – Anna Karenina
- Haggard, Rider – Nada The Lily
- Shakespeare – Coriolanus
5 Classics Club books you can’t WAIT to read
6. Austen, Jane – Pride and Prejudice7. Blackmore, R. D. – Lorna Doone
8. Bronte, Charlotte – Jane Eyre
9. Spyri, Johanna – Heidi
10. Hardy, Thomas – Tess of the D’Urbervilles
5 Classics Club books you are neutral about
11. Twain, Mark – The Adventures of Tom Sawyer 12. Eliot George – Silas Marner 13. Wright, Richard – Black Boy 14. Hardy Thomas – The Mayor of Casterbridge 15. Virginia Woolf – Mrs. Dalloway5 Free choice (favorite author, rereads, ancients — whatever you choose.) And those I have chosen below are my favourites/re-reads
16. Ama Ata Aidoo – Dilemma of a Ghost 17. Hope, Anthony – Prisoner of Zenda 18. Ayi Kwei Armah – Beautiful Ones Are Not Yet Born 19. Haggard, Rider – King Solomon’s Mines 20. Stevenson, Robert Louise – Treasure IslandI do hope my lucky number comes up this time. Wish me luck 🙂

Jane Eyre is fabulous! Looking forward to finding out what everyone gets to read 🙂

I loved Jane Eyre ages ago. Would not mind reading it again.
Seyi sandra said:
I absolutely love ‘The beautiful ones are not yet born,’ and ‘Treasure Island.’ I wish you luck on your reading quest! 🙂
readinpleasure said:
Thanks, Seyi 🙂 I really did not like Beautiful Ones Are Not Yet Born. Well I think it is better to say that I did not understand it then since i read it a long time ago
Penny L Howe said:
Looks like excellent choices to me, Celestine! I’d go with number 18! 🙂
readinpleasure said:
Thanks, Penny Read it a long time ago. Quite political I recall 🙂
Penny L Howe said:
Well yes, but it’s also about waking to freedom (greed, power and choices or lack thereof) and understanding a little of the nature of human beings! 🙂 My passion, the understanding of “we” humans, the good and the not so good! 🙂
Lucid Gypsy said:
Oh dear there’s a fair bit of gloom in there especially Tess and Mrs Dalloway!
readinpleasure said:
Is that so? Hmm, guess what? The spin number that came up was 6, Pride and Prejudice for me 🙂
Lucid Gypsy said:
Hooray my second favourite of Miss Austen’s!
Jennifer said:
I hope we end up with a good number 🙂 I love these spins, they are great motivation!
readinpleasure said:
Oh, no. 6 just came up in my mail. And for me it is Pride and Prejudice 🙂 Oh well, what can I say?

Luck luck being sent your way!
readinpleasure said:
Oh Marie, I ended up with No. 6, Pride and Prejudice
Fanda said:
Aww…you have Anna Karenina there, I’m not sure I’ll pick that one for a month reading. From your list I have only read Tom Sawyer, Mrs. Dalloway and Treasure Island. Actually I liked Huck Finn more than Tom Sawyer, but Mark Twain’s adventures novels are really enjoyable.
Good luck with the spin! 😉
readinpleasure said:
Thank you Fanda. it seems I had my wish because No. 6 turned out to be Pride and Prejudice for me. I may add Huckleberry Finn to my original list since I’ve been gifted a copy.
Bruce Ruston said:
good luck to you
readinpleasure said:
Thanks, Bruce. Actually the spin yielded No. 6, Pride and Prejudice for me. Looking forward to reading it.

I guess I got the luck. My lucky number brought me Pride and Prejudice 🙂

Great list!

Thanks Heather 🙂
Sam (Tiny Library) said:
Dracula and Anna Karenina are both on my favourite books EVER list, so I’m kind of hoping you get one of these, even if you are hesitant to read them..
readinpleasure said:
Oh Sam, now that the spin brought up Pride and prejudice as my no 6, I wish it had picked Anna. The raves about it are so good 🙂
Roof Beam Reader said:
Dracula was not at all what I expected, but it was so good. I liked Anna Karenina, too (though not as much as War and Peace). Pride and Prejudice is one of the best novels ever written, in my opinion. And I LOVED Jane Eyre and The Mayor of Casterbridge, too.
You’ve got plenty on this list that I haven’t read yet, too, so it’d be interesting to read your thoughts on those.
Good luck with the Spin!
readinpleasure said:
Thanks, Roof Beam. 🙂 You’ve just made it more easier for me to read P and P; the spin came up with this as no. 6. Though it is a re-read, I can’t remember any detail at all. Dracula is also a re-read but the vampire bit and all that blood sucking put me off
lakesidemusing said:
So many great choices here! I would hesitate on the Shakespeare, too, but Anna Karenina was actually very good. Good luck 🙂
readinpleasure said:
Thanks. My luck came up tops 🙂 I got to read Pride and Prejudice though I may have preferred Anna
Sharmishtha Basu said:
read most of them!
readinpleasure said:
Glad to hear this 🙂 Hope you enjoyed the reads
Tanya @ Mom's Small Victories said:
Hoping for a # in your can’t wait to read category. Pride and Prejudice was hard to get through in the beginning for me. Here’s my Classics Club Spin list if you’d like to stop by.
readinpleasure said:
Guess what? P and P just came up as my lucky number in the spin. 🙂 Thanks a million for coming by, Tanya
StetotheJ said:
Pride and prejudice is my read at the moment and it is enjoyable, wasn’t sure i would like it but have been pleasantly surprised. King Solomon’s Mines, Treasure Island were wonderful too. Good choices.
readinpleasure said:
Thank you, StetotheJ. I loved King Solomon’s Mines and Treasure Island. P and P will not be bad I hope, now that the spin has come up with it as my number 6.
StetotheJ said:
P&P has lots of class and battle of the sexes themes but manages to put them across in a witty and intelligent way. It’s a lot cleverer than i imagined it would be.
readinpleasure said:
You are right about the wit. I’ve started to enjoy Mr. Bennet’s sharp sarcasm and dry humour 🙂
StetotheJ said:
Mrs Bennett is oblivious to it all, that just makes it so much more hilarious.
readinpleasure said:
I can’t believe she could be so dense 🙂
StetotheJ said:
She makes me look intelligent!
readinpleasure said:
Oh no! I’m laughing so hard at this 🙂 You ARE Intelligent 🙂

Isi said:
wow you are not going to read “a classic”; you are going to read “the classic” 😉
I liked Pride and prejudice very much (I read it last summer, in Spanish), hope you like it too!!
readinpleasure said:
Isi, I hope I do. Though it is a re-read, I can hardly remember a thing. 🙂 Thanks for coming by 🙂
tigerbrite said:
I admire what you are starting here, the very best of luck with it.

Thank you so much my friend 🙂
Jennifer said:
P&P, yahoo! One of the best books ever written 😀 I got Robinson Crusoe
readinpleasure said:
Oh I loved Robinson Crusoe when I read ages ago as a kid. 🙂
Brona said:
Lucky you – P&P – one of my all time favourite comfort reads 🙂
Enjoy!
I got Tess – a reread for me that I’m thrilled to be visiting again.
readinpleasure said:
Thank you so much, Brona. But frankly I would not have minded Tess since I have an e-notated version on my kindle that has been dying to be read for about a year now. :-). I would have loved Anna Karenina too 🙂
