Today is the last day of this wonderful challenge at Rajani’s. And we are ending it with a Jisei, Japanese poem about death. I choose to write the Jisei in cherita form.

Silver Clouds

these silver clouds

hide the flow of my tears
O empty soul

how life’s changing scenes
linger
to abate this grief

Rajani wants us to write a minute poem, 12 lines of 60 syllables broken into in 3 stanzas, following the 8/4/4/4 syllable pattern and the aabb/ ccdd/ eeff/ rhyme scheme.

will you be my lover tonight
siren of night
sing me to sleep
in your arms deep

like tranquil waters softly spill
 over a hill
you are the breeze
I need to breathe

so be my lover one more time
when tides are high
and nights are dim
sing me to peace

We are trying the Naani today at Rajani’s. The Naani  is a four line poem with 20-25 syllables. The first two lines provide the subject that the next two bring to an interesting close.

Today, Rajani  wants us to try the Ghazal, a lyrical, challenging and utterly beautiful when it comes out right. The repeating end word and rhyming word of each couplet define the cadence of the ghazal and direct its mood. (The rhyming word appears twice in the first couplet) Originally an Arabic verse form dealing with loss and romantic love, medieval Persian poets embraced the ghazal, eventually making it their own. Consisting of syntactically and grammatically complete  couplets, the form also has an intricate rhyme scheme. Well, it is a challenge right?

Micropoetry Month

Morning

how serene you are this morning
your talc permeates my morning

your laughter-dimpled cheeks deflate
its contents to darken my dream morning

but I drink in your song
bidding me good night in the morning

how serene you look this morning of death
your pain my sorrow morning

my baby, my love, sing me your song of release
andante, andante, to wake up my morning

(Well, I tried. 🙂 )

Rajani  wants us to write poems about poetry…LOL. 🙂

Micropoetry Month

Soul Poetry (1/10/13)

I eat the words baked in your mud heart

I drink in your puddle of juices

flowing from your mouth

Poetry cries out in her veins. Clawing to be let out in verses reeking of firewood smoke seen above the thatched roofs of the village at sunset. Mothers are busy preparing the evening meal. Above the din of bleating goats and barking of stray dogs in heat, the wailing of hungry children can be heard.

thirsty and crazy I gulp your words

soothing my virgin soil

I crave for more

He is oblivious to the silence that gradually settles on the village. Mouths are busy chewing and throats are belching out the satisfaction of meals well digested. Under the fading glint of the twilight, they eat love, their meal for the night.

feed me nectar

from your spring

Ghana, Haiku, Nature

Haiku should seize the essence of a moment anchored in close observation of nature. Rajani’s  thinks this is truly the hardest form of poetry to get right to be simple yet profound, layered yet obvious, beautiful yet utterly truthful. And I do agree. 🙂

Today is tanka day at Rajani’s.  Somehow, I’ve never been good with the tanka. 🙂 So this is just a small poem.

scented rays hug me

The Rains

the rains came down

not meteorites

defying all odds

and my thoughts are clean

in wait for the fermentation

of old desires

dormant beneath

withered breath
