I can’t imagine the last time I participated in the Carpe Diem Haiku Challenge. but today, I have been drawn to the blog of Kristjaan, the wonderful host, in celebration of the 8th Anniversary of the Challenge, this October 2020. I have truly missed reading Kristjaan’s works and that of the all the haijin. 🙂 I hope my offering captures today’s theme . 🙂

Done for Carpe Diem. The challenge is to write a troiku based on the haiku below by my very self 🙂

empty calabash
reflecting the fading sun
a beggar sits in gloom

Troiku

empty calabash
reflecting the fading sun
a beggar sits in gloom

empty calabash
no sweetness
in the beggar’s life

reflecting the fading sun
the penny
in his calabash

a beggar sits in gloom
watching the pennies go by
fading sun

Happy New Year to you all. 🙂 It’s taken me so long to write my first post of the year. I guess I was resting my mind but I come with good tidings! Happy to inform you that my troiku was the winning troiku in a Troiku Contest organized by Kristjaan Pannerman, host of Carpe Diem Haiku Kai (CDHK) and Michael Smeer of Haiku Pond Academy on Facebook. The contest was to create a Troiku based on the late Jane Reichhold’s haiku below:

golden shade
under the redwoods
evergreen violets

© Jane Reichhold

And to honour my win, Kristjaan has featured me as a special guest on his blog today. Please visit his blog and read all the wonderful things he has written about me. 🙂

Below is my wining troiku based on Jane Reichhold’s:

golden shade
where my pillow rests
a slice of sunlight

under the redwoods
a worm burrows deeper
into itself

evergreen violets
a butterfly seeks rest
on the gravestone

At Carpe Diem We are to use these words to write four sets of haiku; rain, young leaves, buds, mountain, silence, monk, river, summer breeze, she, snow, sparrow, blue sky.

Full Circle

overnight rain

young leaves sprout into colours

a carnival of buds

2

mountain dew

kneeling in the silence

a monk in prayer

3

by the moonlit river

she dances naked

summer breeze wanes

4

overnight snow

the sparrow’s flight

tracks the blue sky

Inspired by Jane Reichhold’s tanka below:

oo old for new love
the moon rises each night
as I remember
the backseats of strange cars
it’s helpful light afterwards

Rising Moon

spreading iridescence

and confetti

autumn’s breath

over our entwined  bodies
